This proposal for a mini-symposium is a continuation of the workshop on renewable energy held during MSAS'06.
In Mali just like anywhere else, access to electricity, safe drinking water and good healthcare services is strongly dependent on the availability of a reliable energy network. We will address the issue of energetic self-sufficiency by primarily considering renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaics, solar thermal, biomass (e.g: Jatropha biofuel) and windpower. Selected presentations will be organized in three sessions:
- Definition of basic principles, tutorials and knowledge transfer (renewable energy) for secondary education and higher education students/teachers
- Mali governmental strategies - national programs supported by the private sector or the civil society - energy development policies in rural communities
- International technical initiatives relevant for Southern countries: applied research, pilot studies in remote areas, scalability projects, assessment of socio-economic impact etc.
In order to foster partnership in the field of educational pedagogy, research initiatives, feasibility studies and national development programs, each session will involve resident scientists and international experts.
We hope that renewable energy proposals discussed during the conference will be followed by concrete assignments which will benefit the most vulnerable individuals from the semi arid regions - esp. those located in rural areas.
