Abstract :
As for the previous MSAS editions, this mini-symposium will cover issues on the access and management of water resources dedicated to consumption and for soil maintenance. In Africa, contamination derived from pathogens has the most devastating impact with fatal diseases affecting the youngsters and the most senior citizens. In Mali, other forms of pollution for drinking water are also prevalent due to the following factors: high content in chromium, lead, gold mining substances, (dyeing industry, gasoline, mining etc) iron, manganese, nitrates and nitrites, fluoride and calcium. Excess chlorination is often utilized to kill pathogens in surface water from Bamako's surroundings, yet the risk to generate carcinogens substances is real - e.g: halo-hydrocarbons or halo-acetoamines. This conference will essentially address a) water treatment via modern filtration and purification processes, and b) water resources management (environmental protection, water quality analysis, numerical modeling on the state of a water stream) in arid and semi-arid regions. The adaptability of proposed techniques will be assessed in terms of energetic consumption, modularity/compaction, degree of complexity (technology transfer, maintenance and prevention) and environmental impact. Selected topics will be presented in three sessions:
- Education, training and information campaigns:
- Basics on filtration techniques
- Professional societies, research centers, chairs and foundations
- Teaching focused on water and health in secondary schools
- National policy and strategy (arid and semi arid areas)
- Water resources management
- Research programs
- Calls for papers (in support of the most undeserved citizens)
- Research and development international initiatives
- Feasibility of new concepts of filtration, purification and analysis
- Energetic, environmental impacts and relevance of new processes in arid and semi arid regions
- Recent discoveries and key progresses
