Localization refers to the translation and adaptation of software and content (in)to a new language. The localization of free and open-source software has undergone an exponential growth recently. It has become an enormous industry and a powerful mechanism in the transfer of technology as well as in the building of new creative industries.

Even if the African participation in this movement is relatively new, the expansion of the African Network for Localization and the creation of numerous associations for the promotion of free open source have given a strong impetus to localization efforts across the continent. Countries like South Africa, Egypt and Kenya are experiencing a remarkable boom in this regard. Other countries are seeking their own development model in the sector.

This conference investigates the main hinges of this emergence of the localization industry, the stakes of free open source for the economy and the education of an African country and the opportunities in international collaboration for universities, companies and cultural organizations. The presentations will cover various fields of research: the translation of open-source software, the building of an online encyclopedia (wiki) and the presence of local knowledge as online content, the building of online work teams, the dynamics of African linguistic and cultural communities on the Internet, the role of volunteer associations and the impact of public policy on shaping a culture of free open-source localization.
